Fasting and Detox Diets Worthless Waste of Time?

As another summer approaches you look down at the reading on your scales, your heart sinks and once more you resolve to get fit and loose weight for summer. Sound familiar? You bet. Why is it that some people gain weight faster than a weight lifter on steroids while others seem to be able to eat anything and remain a stick insect.

In a word its Metabolism. Those with high metabolic rates are destined to remain thin while others are condemned to gain weight after only one chocolate bar. So what can I do to level the playing field? The old saying ‘you are what you eat’ applies here, but it’s easier said than done. All you need to do, allegedly, is raise your metabolic rate and you are home free. But how? How do you change food eating habits of a lifetime and this time make it stick? The only way really is to make a decision. Not easy but necessary – if your head and heart is not behind whatever program you devise then you will fail before you start.

For example pity the smoker who vows to give up only after he has finished his latest packet of ciggies. Why not throw all their cigarettes away and stop immediately. See the difference? This is what we mean by ‘making a decision’.

Okay so what next? You need to find something to mark the start of your quest to loose weight. One way is a fast or a juice diet. A gentle de-toxing of the body for a few days can go a long way to getting you in the right frame of mind to continue with a proper new eating regime. The lemon juice and cayenne pepper diet is well known and used by many to loose weight fast but often old eating habits die hard and the weight returns quicker than ever.

The trick is to have in place a selection of ‘burn the fat’ foods ready to take over from any fast start you might decide to give yourself. Top of the list easily is water. By drinking plenty of water through the day, not all at once, the appetite is naturally suppressed along with a bloated feeling as it flushes out sodium and toxins. Water also increases metabolic rate when taken with food. Green tea and Chilli tea are wonderful metabolism boosters too. Eating hot peppers can speed up your metabolism as they contain Capsaicin which temporarily stimulates your body to release more stress hormones effectively speeding up your metabolism burning more calories. Cayenne pepper, chillies and other spices are great for the heart, increase blood flow and generally help your system function properly so try these to.

Soup while maybe not the most interesting of foods are a great way to burn fat. It seems to work because soup is a mixture of liquid and solids which have a higher hunger satisfying level than just solids food alone which takes longer to digest. Mix soup with hot peppers and you have a real metabolism booster on your hands!

Fruit and vegetables must be high on your new diet plan but none will be higher than grapefruit. Research over thirty years or more has consistently shown that this humble fruit is a mighty demon when it comes to losing weight. Have half a grapefruit a day and result will follow for sure.

For protein use turkey or chicken but remove the skin where most of the fat is. A three ounce serving of boneless, skinless lean turkey breast weighs in at 120 calories and provides 26 grams of appetite-curbing protein, 1 gram of fat and 0 grams of saturated fat.

The way these foods work is to satisfy your hunger so that you do not over eat, they will keep you full for longer with fewer calories. However your mindset is all important but once you are on the path it gets easier as the result come through.

To sum up eat plenty of water rich fruits, vegetables and soups, these will allow you to eat more without piling on the calories. Choose those with high fibre to keep you digestive system functioning properly and use lean meats to boost your metabolism as it take more energy to digest.
